Most Bizarre Items Left Behind by Hotel Guests

Ever got to the airport and kicked yourself because you left something behind at the hotel? You’re certainly not the only one, and if you left behind a book or a laptop charger, your forgotten item is definitely not the strangest thing the cleaners will have found. A poll conducted by a travel website found that an array of strange items have been left behind by hotel guests, including large amounts of cash, live animals, and if you’ll believe it – family members!

The poll found that a dog was left behind in Milan, a bucket of snails was left in a hotel in Budapest, and in Washington, a live snake was found, chilling out in a guest’s hotel room, long after the guest had checked out. $10,000 in cash was left stashed in one US hotel, while in another, a police officer neglected to take his gun and badge when he checked out of his hotel room.

As to the forgotten family members, a man left his wife behind in a Prague hotel room, while another man forgot his mother was with him, and left without her. Elsewhere, in a hotel in Iceland, one married couple left a wedding ring in their room when they checked out. Seeing as it was never claimed, it would seem the holiday was not one the couple agreed on!

A UK hotel chain also released a recent survey to reveal the strangest things left behind by guests when they checked out. Topping that list was a pair of breast implants (the owner had bought them online and was on her way to the clinic to get them fitted), a show pony, and a whole heap of prosthetic limbs (left by different owners in different hotels).

Items also left behind included a set of false teeth, keys to a Bugatti, a $75,000 Rolex, a diamond-encrusted iPhone, a food processor, and a set of four Power Rangers costumes. As for the most popular item left behind, the hotel chain said teddy bears won that crown – with 76,500 of poor things forgotten by their owners. Books were also commonly left behind, with 7,000 copies of Fifty Shades of Grey left behind by hotel guests.

Novotel in Australia conducted a survey last year about its guests, the strange items they leave behind, and some strange things that go on underneath its hotel roofs. Novotel found sex toys and clothing to be high on the list of things left behind by guests. There was also a marked increase in the number of guests having “relations” outside their hotel rooms – in spas, pools, hallways, bars, stairwells, and even in store-cupboards. The survey also found that men were more likely to lock themselves out their room naked, making up 71 percent of all instances.

So, wherever you stay on your next holiday, try not to get locked out of your hotel room naked, be sure to check drawers and cupboards for forgotten items, and double-check you have Teddy before you leave!
